General Ambrose's Aromatic Bitters - For with these bitters, the battle was won...

General Ambrose's Aromatic Bitters are our personal take on the original style of bitters, taking inspiration from the classics but developing our own secret recipe. Pungent and complex, these bitters are aged on a blend of woods, giving them a unique depth and roundness with strong notes of spice, dried fruits, cinnamon, vanilla, and tannins.

Spirits These work well in place of any aromatic bitters and therefore any spirit, but they are especially good with bourbon.

Ideas Try them in an Old Fashioned or a Trinidad Sour, if you're feeling particularly bold.

Tasting Notes Aroma notes of allspice, tree bark, dark spices, orange and a hint of juniper.Taste follows with dried fruit, a woody bitterness, orange, vanilla, cinnamon and caramel.

Soft Night
1.75 oz rye whiskey (Alberta Premium Dark Horse preferred)
.5 oz Luxardo Amaro Abano
.25 oz cinnamon simple syrup
2 droppers Apothecary Bitters General Ambrose's Aromatic Bitters
Absinthe rinse
Twist of orange peel, for garnish

Add rye, Luxardo Amaro Abano, cinnamon simple syrup, and General Ambrose's aromatic bitters to a mixing glass with ice. Stir well. Rinse a chilled old fashioned glass with Absinthe, dumping out the excess, and place a large ice cube into the glass. Strain the mixing glass into the prepared old fashioned glass. Flame the orange peel over the drink, rub the rim of the glass, then drop it in as a garnish.

Siberian Bear Hug
1oz Apple Brandy or Pear Brandy
1oz Campari
.5 oz Cointreau
.5 oz Fernet Branca
2 droppers Apothecary Bitters General Ambrose's aromatic bitters
orange twist, for garnish
 
Add Apple Brandy or Pear Brandy, Campari, Cointreau, Fernet Branca and General Ambrose's to a mixing glass with ice. Stir well, then strain into a chilled coupe. Twist the orange peel over the drink, rub the rim of the glass, then drop it in as a garnish.
 
Autumn Breeze
2 oz Rye (E.H. Taylor, Jr. Straight Rye)
.25 oz Lapsang simple syrup*
3 droppers Apothecary Bitters Mystic Caravan bitters
2 droppers Apothecary Bitters General Ambrose's bitters
Laphroaig 10 yr, to rinse
Twist of orange peel, flamed

Add rye, lapsang simple syrup, Mystic Caravan, and General Ambrose's to a mixing glass with ice and stir well. Rinse a chilled old fashioned glass with Laphroaig, pouring out excess, and add a large ice cube. Strain mixing glass into prepared glass and flame an orange peel, dropping it into the cocktail after, skin side up.

*To make Lapsang simple syrup, combine in a small saucepan over medium heat.
1 cup water, 2 cups brown sugar.
Stir frequently until the sugar is dissolved and bring to a boil. Remove from heat, add 4 tbsp of Lapsang Souchong tea and let steep for 10 minutes. Cool and strain. Keep refrigerated.
